The year 2010 will be a milestone in the HVAC industry with the phase out of
R-22 refrigeration. Beginning in 2010, the U.S. will require all residential air
conditioner and heat pump manufacturers to produce systems that are in
compliance with the U.S. Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. After January 1,
2010 the law prohibits the use of R-22 in new construction, but you can still
install R-22 equipment to replace an existing R-22 system. (Existing R-22
equipment will be available until stocks are depleted) Further more
manufacturers can only manufacture R-410 compliant products after January
1, 2010.
